Welcome to the new CINCH website! Check out what we do and get involved.
The Reclaiming (B)lactation Project is an initiative of CINCH that seeks to reclaim that story of Black Breastfeeding and center the voices of Black families as they tell their real experiences and history of breastfeeding.

Black voices and experiences are consistently underrepresented in birth and breastfeeding outcomes data. Health equity researchers have largely applied a White family-centered research paradigm onto Black families, resulting in an incomplete and disjointed narrative of Black breastfeeding experiences, which, in turn, has led to ineffective and racially biased public health strategies, interventions, and policies to promote breastfeeding. To truly advance maternal-child health equity for Black families in Virginia, we must re-center Black family structures and voices. This is how we decolonize research. We need to listen to the unique stories, concerns, challenges, and needs of Black breastfeeding families. Doing this authentically, respecting Black families, will give them back the autonomy that was inhibited by racism.
